My favorite medium to work with is video. One of the assignments we were required to do assigned students to edit footage and make the story ‘their own’. Film/Video is a great way to get out a message. Even when using footage that was shot for a documentary, as we were, are you capable of turning it into something else, something different, something new!
Using Avid, I edited 2 and half minutes worth of footage and made my Bill Pickett short one about the affects a horse can have on an individual. Through Ike Johnstone, video transitions, music, and imported photographs, was I able to create something new out of something old. While anyone can do this, the way it is done, the stylistic approaches utilized, etc. can all come across differently. Check out my main page to see my version!
If you’d like to do something like this, just open up some footage in Avid, or Final Cut Pro, if you have it. Capture your footage or import footage, pics, etc. from your personal storage device. Double clicking on a file will bring it up into a window in which you can choose in and out points. Once you have done this, drag the clip down onto the timeline and drop it. To add a video transition, go to the left side of the screen and choose which effect you like. Simply place it over the clip or in-between two clips. If you don’t like it, either hit Edit>Undo, or you can highlight it and click on the small button showing a picture of a pair of scissors on it. You also work with imported or captured photos like this as well. To import music, simply click File>Import, and then search for your file. Everything else from there is the same as the previous instructions listed. When needed, hit File> Save Bin Copy As so as to come back to it later. Upon completion, hit File>Export, and then choose among the drop down menus which format you’d like.
Good Luck on creating projects that have meaning to you!
